Post-doc in microencapsulation by droplet interface crossing
Laboratoire Charles Coulomb – CNRS/University of Montpellier – France
We are seeking for a post-doctoral candidate to handle an ANR funded project on microencapsulation. The encapsulation process is based on the generation of calibrated aqueous drops and their coating by crossing of a liquid-liquid interface by centrifugation. The objective is to produce monodispersed capsules of controlled size, content and shell thickness. This project is based on the cDICE process (Continuous Droplet Interface Crossing Encapsulation, Patent EP2456550 A1, July 2010) patented by Laboratoire Charles Coulomb. The final goal of the project is to build a prototype that meets industrial requirements in           terms of capsule size (around 100 microns), shell thickness and production rate.
The candidate will be in charge of two fundamental aspects of the process: i) Understanding of the passage of single drops through an interface by high-speed imaging on a dedicated experimental set-up with the centrifugal forces required to produce capsules with diameters ranging from 90 to 200 microns. This work will complete previous experimental and numerical results; (ii) design and test several chemical systems for the in-situ solidification of capsule shells either by phase transition or by polymerization and quantifying the capsules characteristics resulting from the system and the selected hydrodynamic parameters.
Candidates should have a doctorate in physics, physico-chemistry, mechanics or process engineering Skills in microfluidics, image analysis, and a good knowledge in the field of encapsulation will be much appreciated. Spoken and written English is required as well as fluency in report or publication writing.
The post-doctoral fellow will be part of the Soft Matter (https://coulomb.umontpellier.fr/-Equipe-Matiere-Molle-?lang=en) team at the Charles Coulomb Laboratory (L2C) at the University of Montpellier. He will work under the supervision of Gladys Massiera, as well as with Martin In in the EPIC project on a microencapsulation process. This project is part of a collaboration with two process engineering laboratories, the Chemical Engineering Laboratory (LGC) in Toulouse and the GEPEA (Nantes – Saint Nazaire).

This is a 2-year position funded by the European Research Council (ERC). Candidates with a strong academic background in fluid dynamics, applied mathematics, soft matter physics or a closely related field are strongly encouraged to apply.
Interested candidates should contact me directly by email as soon as possible, providing a detailed CV, publication list, a brief research statement and the name of 2 academic references.
Applications will be reviewed continuously until the position is filled, starting on July 29th.
I would be very grateful if you could forward this announcement to any potential candidate.
Thank you!
Sincerely
Sebastien Michelin

postdoc : mechanics and applied geometry (U.Nevada, Reno)

Postdoctoral (and graduate student) positions available
Applications are invited for multiple postdoctoral positions to work with J. Hanna in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno.  Those interested in Ph.D. and M.S. positions are also invited to make contact.
A variety of experiences and interests are welcome; we will consider proposed research in both theory and experiment in all areas under the very general heading of classical mechanics and applied geometry.  Topics of interest include but are not limited to continuum mechanics (materials, solids, fluids, fluid-structure interaction, structures), dynamics, nonlinear science, soft condensed matter, and materials processing.  Specific topics of current activity include elasticity and mechanics of thin structures.  Experimental experience in sheet metal working, web handling, or another manufacturing area will be viewed favorably.
Postdoctoral positions may last up to three years, and will include significant support for travel, as well as opportunities for collaborations— department faculty expertise includes manufacturing, materials, dynamics, robotics, and other areas.  We are a young and growing group, department, and city, the latter in particular offering a very attractive quality of life.  Interested parties should send a CV to jhannaATunrDOTedu and indicate their research interests and anticipated time frame.  Review of applications will be ongoing, and timing is flexible.

postdoc shape changing materials (Cambridge) – date limite 24 juin

The Theory of Condensed Matter of the Department of Physics, University of Cambridge, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant/Associate to work with Prof. Mark Warner and Dr. John Biggins (Engineering) on shape changing materials applied to micro actuation and robotics, haptics, microfluidics and related systems.

The materials are typically complex, soft, responsive solids. A new mechanics paradigm patterns the response of liquid crystalline solids to change the effective metric, and hence intrinsic curvature, and also to change the extrinsic bend. Complete shape control is aimed for by the additional determination of extrinsic response.

The candidate should have familiarity with theoretical mechanics and (ideally) differential geometry, and with novel material for mechanics, for example liquid crystalline solids, hydrogels, and photo-thermally responsive solids. Some scientific computing experience is highly desirable.

postdoc Bio/Mecanique des Fluides/IA (Marseille)

Dear colleagues,
We are currently hiring PhDs and postdocs to work on the ERC-funded project C0PEP0D. This is an exiting project at the crossroad of Biology, Fluid Mechanics and Artificial Intelligence. We want to understand how planktonic copepods track targets in a turbulent flow without eyesight.
Potential candidates should contact me directly by email. More details can be found here:

postdoc: Mechanics of interwoven elastic rod systems at Princeton University

The Form Finding Lab at Princeton University, NJ, USA is searching for a postdoctoral researcher to support our recently awarded SEAS LACE Project X. In this project we propose to investigate 2D interlaced networks of elastic rods, found in textile crafts, and deliberately drive them into the large deformation realm to create novel 3D elastic (and thus reversible) structures with interesting mechanical properties. The research objectives of this proposal are threefold: to 1) use a mathematical approach to identify interlaced patterns for the purpose of shifting between 2D and 3D states, 2) investigate their reversible mechanical response and establish their performance envelope using an experimental and numerical approach, and 3) design, prototype, and demonstrate the feasibility of interlaced elastic networks at the architectural scale using robotic manufacturing.

postdoc soft matter, satistical physics, biology and mechanics (LPSOrsay/PMMH)

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to advertise two postdoc openings in my group with deadlines for initial consideration on June 20th:

Theory – in Paris & Orsay

We welcome applications from theorists interested in self-assembly in the cytoskeleton and other problems at the interface between Soft Matter/Statistical Physics and Biology. The position presents ample opportunities for strong interactions with local and international collaborators. Autonomous interactions with experimentalists and the development of creative independent projects are encouraged. More at

http://lptms.u-psud.fr/membres/mlenz/PostdocOpening.pdf

Experiments – at ESPCI Paris

We welcome applications from experimentalists interested in the frustrated self-assembly of irregular objects. The position consists in developing an experimental protocol to design and produce colloids of arbitrary shapes using a sub-micrometer-resolution 3D printer, then monitor their self-assembly to demonstrate the tendency of irregular shapes to aggregate into fibers and sheets as discussed in recent theoretical work.
