Meeting on rheology of multiphase geological materials – 18/19 Dec 2017, Bristol

This year’s British Society of Rheology Midwinter meeting will be held on 18/19th December in Bristol.

The theme of the meeting is « Rheology and flow of multiphase geological materials » and the goal is to open a dialogue between the geo-rheo community and the broader rheology community – hopefully to the benefit of both.

We will be focussing particularly on the rheology of multiphase magma, and the rheology of granular flows.

You can read more about the meeting here:

http://www.bristol.ac.uk/earthsciences/events/2017/earth-sciences—bsr-meeting.html

We hope that you will be interested in attending the meeting and look forward to welcoming you in Bristol.

The conference dates are 14 – 15 December 2017 and the event will be held at Palacio de Congresos de Mérida, Mérida, Extremadura, Spain.

This conference forms a continuation of a successful meeting series on the mechanics of systems employing slender structural elements. The first meeting was held in Northampton, U.K., in 2006 (website http://www.eng.nene.ac.uk/~conf2006/Symposium.htm ), followed by the event hosted in Baltimore, USA., in 2008 (website http://www.eng.nene.ac.uk/~moss2008/index.html ), in San Sebastian, Spain (website: http://www.mondragon.edu/MoSS2010/) in Harbin, China, in 2013 (http://cndr.hit.edu.cn/MoSS2012), in Northampton, UK, in 2015 (http://www.eng.nene.ac.uk/~moss2015/index.html) and in Shanghai, China, in 2016.

Abstracts of up to 300 words are invited in electronic format and should be submitted as an MS Word file via e-mail to the Symposium Office.

The key conference dates are as follows:

Deadline for submission of abstracts   17th of July 2017
Authors notified of acceptance of abstracts   30th of July 2017
Submission of extended abstract    29th of September 2017
Authors notified of acceptance of extended abstracts  31st of October 2017
Conference dates   14-15 of December 2017

ASME Congress, Soft Materials (Deadline July, 19th), Tampa, Florida

The Soft Materials Mechanics Technical Committee would like to remind you that JULY 19th is the deadline for presentation only abstract submission. The ASME will not extend this deadline!

webpage: https://www.asme.org/events/imece

Please consider submitting abstract to “Mechanics of Solids, Structures, and Fluids” Track (12), Topic 12-22, “Mechanics of Soft Materials”

We are excited to host sessions related to the following topics:

  • Active Materials
  • Mechano-Chemistry
  • Mechano-Biology
  • Gels
  • Mechanical Characterization
  • Degradation and Failure
  • Adhesion
  • Computational Methods
  • Instabilities (specific instructions are below)
  • 3D Printing of Soft Materials

We ask that all abstracts include a sentence at the end that indicates which session the abstract is intended for. For example, if you would like to present in the “3D Printing in Soft Materials” session please include the following direction at the end of your abstract, “This abstract is intended for the 3D Printed Soft Materials session.”

Abstracts focusing on Instabilities of Soft Materials should be submitted to topic 12-11: “Instabilities in Soft Matter Solids and Structures” (co-sponsored with the Instabilities TC).

The soft materials mechanics committee will participate in the “Congress-wide Symposium on Additive Manufacturing” by hosting sessions on the “3D printing of soft materials”.

Please email us with any questions or specific requests that you have.

Have a nice summer, and we will see you in Tampa!

ASME Congress, Instability in Structures and Solids (Deadline July, 19th), Tampa, Florida

Dear Colleague:

We, the AMD IiSS Technical Committee organizers, are pleased to continue our long-standing tradition of arranging a symposium on « Instabilities in Solids and Structures » at the annual ASME-International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition (IMEC&E).  The Congress will be held in Tampa, Florida during the period of November 3–9, 2017.  Contributions on instability in both material and structural systems are welcome.  As you are aware, this is a major mechanical engineering meeting with upwards of 2,000 international participants.  Our Technical Committee has participated with success in the Congress since 1994 and we certainly would like to keep up this tradition.

webpage: https://www.asme.org/events/imece

It is now time to solicit submission of abstracts for our sessions! Participation requires just the submission of an abstract by **July 19, 2017**. (This is a hard deadline; do not expect an extension.)

Upload your abstract at your earliest convenience;  the symposium is in the

Track « Mechanics of Solids, Structures and Fluids » as Topic « 12-10 Instabilities in Solids and Structures »

This year, we are pleased to continue our collaboration with the ASME AMD Technical Committee on Soft Matter, to co-sponsor a special symposium on instabilities in soft matter.  If you work in this area, we encourage you to upload your abstract to the

Track « Mechanics of Solids, Structures and Fluids » as Topic « 12-11 Instabilities in Soft Matter Solids and Structures »

Workshop : yielding transition of amorphous materials

Dear Colleague,

We are organizing a small informal workshop at the ENS in Paris, at the end of October, on the yielding transition of amorphous materials. Please check the following website for more details:
https://sites.google.com/site/yieldingworkshop/

The workshop will consist in six review talks (1h each), with a lot of time devoted to informal discussions. We thus expect fruitful exchanges on the topics related to the yielding phenomena.

Hoping to see you on this occasion in Paris,
Best regards,

Elisabeth Agoritsas and Francesco Zamponi
