Instability of a surface Marangoni jet.

A Marangoni flow is created on a confined surface by depositing a concentrated solution of surfactant on a air/water interface between to vertical walls. This creates a surface jet that extends because of its inertia on typically 20 cm. This jet eventually destabilizes into meanders with a well-defined wavelength. The features of this instability are studied theoretically and experimentally, by exciting the jet at a chosen frequency, and recording the deformation at the same frequency to analyze specifically the stability of the chosen frequency.
