Journée – Friction & Slender Structures

The GdR Méphy co-organizes with the GDR MecaFib a thematic day on the mechanics of slender structures (beams, plates) in coupling with friction. The mechanical properties and dynamics of entangled media, fabrics, biological fibers and knitted fabrics depend on frictional interactions between elements, on their structural organization (e.g. their size distribution or their ordered or disordered spatial arrangement) and on the mechanical properties of the fibers (bending and buckling). These media are thus close to other flexible mechanical metamaterials widely studied by the physical mechanics community. Their originality lies in the large relative displacements between elements and the strong nonlinearities arising from impermanent frictional contacts and the resulting collective effects which remain poorly described. The goal of the day is to gather and confront experimental, theoretical and numerical approaches around these issues.

Le GdR Méphy co-organise avec le GDR MecaFib une journée thématique sur la mécanique des milieux élancés (poutres, plaques), leurs assemblages et leurs mécanismes dissipatifs et tout particulièrement le rôle de la friction. Les milieux enchevêtrés, les tissus, fibres biologiques, tricots présentent des propriétés mécaniques et une dynamique qui dépendent des interactions frictionnelles entre éléments, de leur organisation structurelle (par exemple de leur distribution de taille ou de leur disposition dans l’espace ordonnée ou désordonnée) et des propriétés mécaniques des fibres (flexion et flambage). Ces milieux se rapprochent ainsi d’autres métamatériaux mécaniques flexibles largement étudiés par la communauté mécanique physique. Leur originalité réside dans les grands déplacements relatifs entre éléments et les fortes non-linéarités découlant des contacts frictionnels non permanents et des effets collectifs résultants qui restent mal compris. Le but de la journée est de rassembler et confronter approches expérimentales, théoriques et numériques autour de ces problématiques.
