Programmable matter

Programmable materials are materials whose micro- and/or meso-macro structure is designed in such a way that they obey desired behavior laws.
When these laws differ from those usually found in nature, the corresponding materials are often called metamaterials.
When the desired law is obtained through a tight coupling between sensing, information processing and actuation, they are usually denoted as smart materials.
This workshop will be dedicated to materials for which the behavior law of interest is of mechanical nature. Both bulk (for instance the stress/strain curve, active response) and interfacial (friction, fracture,…) phenomena will be considered, with an emphasis on the physical mechanisms involved both at the micro- and macro-scales.
Note that wave phenomena are not the main focus of this workshop, as they are extensively discussed in GDR META.

The aim of the workshop is to initiate discussions and exchanges of ideas among the French community interested in this growing field. It will bring together mechanicians and physicists to discuss numerical, experimental and theoretical approaches to explore and describe the numerous potential applications of programmable matter.

IMPORTANT : We would like this workshop to provide the ground for a fundamental but also less formal, open scientific discussion in the above described subject. We strongly encourage participants to give a presentation, in particular young scientists and students.
