Active Materials (electro- or magneto- responsive solids)

Scope

GDR MePhy, together with LMS (Ecole Polytechnique) has organized a one-day workshop on the physics and mechanics of active solids (magneto- or electro- responsive elastomers).

There is a growing interest in these system with the development of soft robotics, soft sensors, or novel energy harvesting strategies. Because here mechanics if coupled to other physical forces (electro-magnetism), the description of these objects lies at the intersection of physics and mechanics.

There are many challenges in the development and understanding of such materials : electro-mechanical instabilities, optimization of material properties, fabrication…

The aim of the workshop was to bring together mechanicians and physicists to discuss numerics, experiments and theoretical descriptions of active solids.

This meeting is done in an effort to initiate a discussion and exchange of ideas and knowledge in the French community (and more largely in the European community in this field).
